Izzy D'Aquila's late goal lifts Portland Thorns over San Diego Wave

Izzy D'Aquila scored in the 85th minute to give the Portland Thorns a 1-0 victory over San Diego Wave FC at Providence Park on Friday.

The match was tightly contested throughout, with both teams creating several scoring opportunities but failing to convert until D'Aquila's decisive strike.

San Diego had an early chance when Alex Morgan missed a header from close range in the 20th minute. The visitors continued to press but were unable to break through Portland's defense.

Portland also had their share of chances, including a shot by Sophia Smith that was saved by Kailen Sheridan in the first half and another attempt by Christine Sinclair that went wide just before halftime.

In the second half, both teams made substitutions in search of a breakthrough.

D'Aquila made her presence felt almost immediately after coming on as she connected with Janine Beckie's cross from close range. The play was reviewed by VAR but ultimately confirmed as good.

San Diego pushed for an equalizer in stoppage time but couldn't find a way past Shelby Hogan, who recorded several saves down the stretch.
