Rebecca Solnit has been an essential commentator on politics and culture for several decades now, but with the feminist burgeoning of the last few years, it’s started to feel like the world has caught up with her. She wrote the essay Men Explain Things to Me which spawned the term ‘mansplaining’, and though she didn’t coin the word herself, there’s something appropriately Solnit-ish about it. She has a talent for divining the kinds of things that are so pervasive they’re almost impossible to identify, and which it is an extraordinary relief to be able to name – even if naming alone isn’t enough to remedy them.
