Picking up a different breed
GUNDOGS
Q I have always shot and picked-up with spaniels and labradors. I have just retired and, with more time on my hands, I fancied the challenge of a different breed. I have considered an Italian spinone or a German wirehaired pointer, or even a Münsterländer. Am I being overconfident and getting into something I might regret? Most of my sport is rough shooting, with some wildfowling when I get the chance.
A I commend your decision to take on one of these breeds. While you may well have to adopt a very different approach to your training methods — and probably have more patience and tolerance in the early stages — the new challenge will be worthwhile. All the gundog breeds that are not widely seen on our shoots have a staunch and dedicated following within their own ranks, who are keen to see that true working instincts are maintained. That
