Knowing how useless most of them were at running their own lives should not make you despair. Well, not yet. What’s that quote about the saddest words being

“it might have been”? It’s all too true, says The Bear, although “pen” does not really rhyme with “been”.

Many years ago, when the author John Steinbeck felt old age creeping up on him, he invented the camper van.

No kidding, he really did. He bought a small truck and had a caravan built onto the back of it; nobody else had ever really thought of doing that before. Steinbeck wanted the camper because he could feel that he was getting old but didn’t want to give in to the feeling and was determined to take one more look at the America
