The Family TREE

Erin wrestled the Christmas tree into the stand then stood back, checking with a critical eye to see if it was straight. Overflowing boxes of trimmings, tangled lights and strands of tinsel littered the floor around her.

‘I don’t suppose you’re going to help me with this?’ she asked the dog who was watching from the sofa. His only reaction was a cheerful thump of his tail.

Decorating the tree with Gary and the kids had always been Erin’s favourite part of Christmas. This year, their first with an empty nest, she and Gary had agreed not to bother with the hassle of a tree. But then today, walking down the high street with all the festive windows, Erin had changed her mind.

Her reverie was broken by the phone ringing, and seeing her husband’s name come up on the screen brought a smile. He had been overseas on business and she couldn’t wait to have him home again.
