THE LADY in the lake

Each time Lillian walked in the woods, she wondered if today might be the day she’d trip over a body. Not that she wanted to, of course, but it was always dog walkers who found bodies, and it was something she imagined might happen. Especially since she had rescued Arthur, an inquisitive Cairn Terrier.

‘The usual way, Arthur?’ she asked him, convinced that he nodded in return. Their favourite ramble was into the woods, over the hill where they paused halfway to take in the view, down the other side, a couple of laps around the lake, skirting the car park, and home.

A perfect head-clearer, Lillian thought. Exactly what she needed today.

It had been disconcerting to arrive at ‘Paws’, the animal charity shop she volunteered at, to discover the window had been removed. It had been carefully placed inside the store, and things were missing.
