Games has been widely recognized as a groundbreaking, one-of-a-kind publication. Many enthusiasts point to the Fake Ad, the Hidden Contest, and the incomparable Pencilwise section as hallmark features. But there have also been times when individual puzzles (or people!) became so popular that they rose to legendary status. Our first issue under review in this month’s column has not one, but two items that became the stuff of legend. So let’s get to it!

40 YEARS AGO: MAY/JUNE 1981

The cover puzzle of this issue is a quintessential example of Games ingenuity. In this immersive challenge, illustrated by Fred Marcellino, readers were required to read the instructions, search through the magazine to find a treasure, and then reread the instructions in reverse, all while holding their breath.
