I don’t usually read books more than once, but I must have read Daphne du Maurier’s classic, Rebecca, six or seven times since I discovered it in my teens.

I love Daphne du Maurier s writing and her clever, haunting plot, but I honestly didn’t see the parallels between the novel and my own life. Not until Jake held a party so I could meet his friends.

I mean, I knew he’d been married because he told me that when we first met in the Algarve, but I didn’t know there was a mystery surrounding the end of his marriage, and I didn’t realise that Christina had been beautiful – until Veronica sidled up to me at the party and looked me up and down.

‘You’re nothing like Christina,’ she said.

‘Aren’t I?’ I replied as alarm bells rang in my head. ‘What was she like, then?’
