The elusive Azores
Books such as Robinson Crusoe, Moby Dick and Treasure Island fermented a childish longing for the sea and exotic islands.
The Azores, a speck on our family atlas and breeding ground for whales, soon found its way onto my radar of imagination. Encyclopedia Britannica showed pictures of whaling from small rowing boats. One day I would go there, a promise that has since proved to be remarkably elusive.
