As a shy 16-year-old chosen as one of the talented young artists to contribute to an exhibition of paintings at Hampton Court for Prince Charles’s 50th birthday, Rebecca Grant couldn’t quite pluck up the courage when they met to tell him that they were related.
It was only afterwards in a letter that she mentioned her direct lineage to the Bowes-Lyon family and the Queen Mother, which prompted a touching reply that she has treasured ever since.
“He wrote how it was wonderful to meet and acknowledged my great-grandmother Ernestine, who grew up at Glamis Castle with her cousin [Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, later Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother],” says the 39-year-old artist and actress – currently appearing in BBC1 crime drama – as she welcomes to her home in Norfolk.
