As we arrived at the hospital in Pendlebury, Salford, a consultant told me that they wouldn’t be able to take a biopsy of the mass in Cameron’s brain, as it was pressing on his brain stem, but he was sure it was cancer.

‘It could compromise his breathing, so we need to act quickly,’ he explained.

It was so much to try and take in.

But there was more.

‘There’s a high chance that Cameron will not come out of this operation the same boy he went in,’ the consultant said gently.

I nodded numbly
