WERE IT NOT FOR THE UNWANTED amorous attentions of Franco Zeffirelli, the noted Italian film and theatre director, Dave Smith might have specialised in portraiture rather than photographing cars.
‘I was about 25 at the time and working as an assistant to a well-known portrait photographer called David Gamble,’ explains Smith. ‘We were doing a shoot for the Independent on Sunday and were expecting half an hour with Franco at his house in Chelsea. We were going to photograph him in his kitchen as he cooked a meal for his friends and biographer. Anyway, Franco took a massive shine to me and insisted we stay for dinner. Gamble, of course, was happy because it gave him more time for pictures.
