Taking their age, handling and condition into consideration when planning your weanling’s Halter class preparation, is the responsible way. For the purpose of this article, let’s assume your weanling is a filly, has been handled well and is looking quite nice. Being accustomed to a halter, understanding pressure and release and having learned to lead and stand quietly will be of great benefit. A few rules of thumb—be patient and kind, don’t constantly keep her in a stable, don’t over-feed her, and don’t overdo any form of forced exercise.
HEALTH: Know your weanling in its healthy state, and always keep an eye on her well-being. If something doesn’t look right, call the vet. When babies get sick they can go downhill very fast. If in a tick area, check them daily.
A good daily routine is essential. Evaluating your Halter baby on a daily basis with regards to feed, exercise and condition is both important and intelligent. Have your weanling’s teeth checked and ensure she’s on a regular, good quality feed and deworming program. Check each biscuit of hay to make certain it’s absolutely weed and mould-free, and always hang haynets up at the youngster’s head height, and remember, slow-feed hay nets are great.
