“‘Have whatever you fancy, Mum,’ said our Rachel. ‘My treat.’

We are in what would probably describe itself as a gastropub. It’s a rather traditional country inn with a very smart dining room attached. Smart, but not showy, if you know what I mean.

The walls are wood panelled, and painted in that shade of Farrow & Ball which can’t decide whether it’s grey or green. In winter, a fire would be crackling politely but energetically in the grate.
