Janey Winters rubbed a patch of the grimy window and peered out – at last her train was pulling into Whitstable station. A journey that should have taken a little over an hour from London had taken more than three due to two stops caused by air-raid warnings.
Although Janey was glad to be returning to her home town in Kent, she was seriously worried about her father, who had ignored letters and several telephone calls in the past week. Where was he?
She pulled down her small case from the luggage rack above her head and stepped out onto the dark platform. If it wasn’t for knowing her surroundings, she would have been unaware that this was Whitstable due to the removal of all signs that could alert enemy infiltrators as to where they were.
She set off at a brisk pace towards the seafront where her father, Reginald Winter, a prominent scientist for the Government, still lived in the family home that looked out over the shingle beach.
As a rule, Janey adored her visits, which reminded her so much of days gone by before the war. Now she worked in London as a secretary to Sir Desmond Ridgley, a big shot in the War Office. It was he who had suggested she visit Whitstable when he’d noticed how worried she was and asked why.
