When I was 18, I got a part-time job making sandwiches in a delicatessen.
My co-worker Bev had been there for years and loved to snipe about the customers.
‘He’s a piece of work,’ she’d say, or ‘Did you see what she was wearing? Mustn’t have a mirror!’
‘That’s just mean, Bev,’ I’d tell her.
