PLENTY of riders are good. Some are great. Only a handful go down in history as the defining horsemen of their generation. There is no doubt where Gina fits on that scale.

Sport has a funny way of delivering a story. Gina rang in the new year by breaking Polly Gundry’s long-standing record as the winning-most point-to-point rider of all time, on Fumet D’Oudairies – a horse bought for a single bid for £800. Foxhunters glory and a ninth championship title followed, with her husband Tom Ellis also smashing the record for the most winners trained in a season.

“The highlight of this season has been the highlight of my entire career, and that was Latenightpass winning the Foxhunters at Aintree. That was a dream come true. I used to think I’d rather win at the Cheltenham Festival,” says Gina, who piloted Domesday Book to victory in the 2017 Kim Muir. “But Dad always said to me, ‘Riding a winner at Aintree is better than Cheltenham.’ I always thought that’s because he hadn’t ridden a winner
