NO EGGS today

Harry stared at the handwritten sign… No eggs today. Please call to place an order. Angela.

The first time he bought a box of six eggs, they were so good, he made sure to make a detour the next time he went walking so he could buy more.

He’d left a note with the empty box, thanking Angela and saying he’d be back the following weekend.

To his great surprise, an envelope containing a reply was waiting for him when he returned.

He’d jotted a few words on the back of her missive, thinking that would be that, but the exchange of notes continued. Six months later, he’d come to think of Angela as a friend, even though they’d never actually met.

Now, preferring not to buy his eggs from the supermarket, he called the number on the sign. A woman answered on the second ring.

‘Hello. Angela Shepherd here. Who’s calling?’

For a moment, the sound of her voice flustered him but he quickly recovered.

‘Oh, hi, Angela. This is Harry Perkins. I’ve been buying your eggs for
