There were rows of adorable, tiny pastel-coloured sleepsuits, stacks of impossibly small frilly socks…

It was December 2010 and, six months pregnant with my first, shopping for baby bits was like being a kid in a candy store.

‘Look!’ I gushed to my friend Kassandra.

She seemed distracted, her eyes locked on my belly.

‘I can't wait to have a bump like yours,’ she said, prodding her own flat tum.

‘You'll be waddling along like me any day,’ I laughed.

The atmosphere shifted. This was getting weird
