Each stamp in The ‘Legend of Robin Hood’ set, all 1st class, vividly depicts a key moment in a legend that has been told over and over, in stories and films. Together, they form the outline of the well-loved tale: Robin declared an outlaw; Robin meeting Little John; Robin being carried by Friar Tuck; Robin robbing the rich; Robin winning an archery contest; Robin capturing the Sheriff of Nottingham; Robin helping Maid Marian to escape; Robin marrying Marian; King Richard removing his disguise, and, finally, Robin shooting his last arrow on his deathbed.

Robin Hood’s origins are believed to, Robin has made numerous screen appearances, notably featuring the heartthrobs of the times: Douglas Fairbanks in 1922, a flamboyantly swashbuckling Errol Flynn in 1938; Sean Connery in 1976, Kevin Costner in 1991, Russell Crowe in 2010. There have been TV Robins, comedy Robins, cartoon Robins and even Hammer Horror Robins. Robin has been depicted as a yeoman and a dispossessed nobleman, and although staple characters like Little John, Will Scarlett and Friar Tuck are consistently present, the tale adapts to the times: the 2006 TV series reflected the UK’s racial and gender diversity in a way not seen in previous interpretations.
