Characters of the Bible Epaphroditus & Epaphras

This month we will take a look at two biblical men who, while related in name, served the early Church in different ways.

Similar name

The name Epaphroditus and its diminutive form Epaphras are male names associated with the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. Literally it means “belonging to Aphrodite”. While both names may seem strange to us, they weren’t uncommon back in the first century. We only learn about these two men from the Apostle Paul’s New Testament letters. Epaphroditus is mentioned twice in Philippians, while Epaphras is mentioned in both Colossians and Philemon.
