EMBRACING DIVERSITY

“Never discuss politics or religion.” This adage is so true, especially in today’s volatile atmosphere. As much as I am an atheist, I do follow Buddhism as a philosophy and having a spiritual practise is, to my mind, a good thing.

But how can a self-confessed atheist follow a religion? Now, that’s an interest.ing question. I do need to point out that though Buddhism can be a religion, it is first and foremost a philosophy. There are no gods in Buddhism. Let that sink in. The Buddha was perfectly okay with his followers worshipping whichever gods they wished – he was born a Hindu, after all. The Buddha was a wise man and he himself said that he never wanted to be worshipped. Buddha means “enlightened” or “awakened”.
