OMG!!! Have you seen this???” I received this message from multiple contacts within the space of a few hours on Thursday afternoon. All of them millennial women. All of them linking to a story announcing that beloved children’s author Jacqueline Wilson was to publish her first adult novel in close to 50 years – and it was going to revisit the main characters from the “Girls” Young Adult series.

“I KNOW!!! IT’S SO EXCITING!!!!” came my response (there were, if anything, even more exclamation marks in the original correspondence).

Why the unbridled hysteria? Well, if you are a woman in your thirties in the UK, you didn’t just grow up with – they were the literary backdrop to your entire childhood, tween, and early teen years.
