The mantra for much of my time at the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) was “what we do matters”. I first used it when answering a question from a new starter about why the ASX was always in the news. I wasn't boasting, just simply acknowledging that the ASX, like other major stock and securities exchanges around the world, operates at the heart of the national economy.
Exchanges support price discovery, capital allocation, risk transfer and wealth creation. Their rules help provide fairness for participants and stability for the system overall. And their initiatives can improve financial literacy and shape corporate behaviour.
