winning letter

We found our real home

I think this might be an unusual letter for Platteland. But it’s inspired by the wonderful letters written by people who would probably be regarded as “typical” Platteland readers. So often the letters are from, or about towns we have visited, or passed through. And many of them are now part of our new life.

We were born and raised in Johannesburg. Merril’s family were travellers – campers and caravaners. My family hardly did any travelling at all. Merril and I, with our respective spouses, then spent, coincidently, 39 years abroad. For our own reasons we decided to come home; she in 2013 and I in 2015. Two years later, when we were 69, we were married, but our travelling had already begun.

We were then living in Joburg, and on our first road trip to Hout Bay (family connection) in 2016, we went via Kimberley. Our stopover was in Britstown and within half an hour
