About this audiobook

On a desolate road in the Oregon high desert, an apprentice mortician stumbles upon a horrific car crash--and into a vortex of treachery, long-buried secrets, and growing menace.

Melisende Dulac is a fish out of water after relocating from the East Coast to a small community in the Oregon high desert. But just as she's beginning to think of Barlow County as home, her life takes an ominous turn when she comes upon a grisly multiple car wreck and three shattered bodies on an isolated road outside of town. Near the scene, Melisende trips over a fourth body, that of a newborn girl lying a physics-defying distance from the wreckage. There is no one to claim the infant, nor a clear indication she was even part of the accident.

The crash offers plenty of opportunities for an apprentice mortician--but when the victims' bodies are stolen from her family's mortuary, Melisende is branded suspect number one. Then, Portland lawyer Kendrick Pride arrives on the scene on behalf of one of the victim's families--or so he says--and Melisende begins to see that there's much more to this enigmatic figure than meets the eye.

As the shadows gather and the mystery deepens, Melisende must race to find the truth--or be swallowed by the darkness.

Editor's Note

Dark and humorous…

Melisende Dulac is a newcomer in a small Oregon town when she stumbles upon a deadly car accident. Something seems off, and things get even stranger when the victims’ bodies are stolen from her family’s mortuary. “Crossroads” is an intriguing mystery that keeps you guessing, and it packs just enough humor to balance the dark plot.

A brother dies in the process of trying to save his 8 yr old sister. Her parents abandon her on her almost dead bed. It's no wonder the only person for the rest of her childhood and into adulthood is the voice of her brother in her head.

Then her husband abandons her in Paris leaving her broke and homeless, but she still has her return ticket to the states. It's no wonder she becomes a mouthy untrusting bitch at times.

Even though they are a little estranged due to guilt on both sides, her friend and husband's sister get an Aunt and Uncle involved to help out Melisande. While things are going fairly well for her as an apprentice undertaker (mortician), all hell starts breaking loose for her again after a very gruesome multi-vehicle pileup she comes across at the Crossroads.

The narration was good and the narrator brought out the emotions of the characters.

I had a hard time putting this down. Although, the heroine is sarcastic, Indid not think of her a whiny. It was a good story that was well narrated.

This book feels like it's part 2 of another book. The story was great, but there were other stories within it that were so confusing! Why even mention the lost husband? Why even mention her attorney friend? What happened there? I missed something. The detailed description of landscapes and furniture (uggg) could have been substituted with details of the relationship between her and all the side stories. It kept me hanging.

I listened to the end, but did not really like the book. The heroine is annoyingly pissed off at everything 99% of the time. And she survives so many physical turmoils that it makes the plot hardly believable.

For a little while I was in the dark. Did not know what happened at crossroad nor did I receive any clues. But finally with Shelly, I was in The light. Price’s demise was a total shock.

I really loved that this book had a very likable main character who was probably autistic. AND it was not some inspirational story about autism either, just inclusive by having an autistic heroine. It was an interesting mystery/thriller with an ending that could not really be predicted.

Horrors of smaller community override backdrop of illegal adoptions. I like the innocence involved. Long and violent the colorful nature of violence is needing mature readers.

What a great book. The protagonist’s occupation lifted it above the average thriller. In my humble opinion this would make the start of a great series.

I really enjoyed this - the characters were interesting and not carbon copies (as in, the men weren't all studly, the women weren't all gorgeous). The plot hung together really well. I've spent time in that part of Oregon and loved the descriptions. One niggle - there are oregon-specific pronunciations which the narrator blew - Willamette for example. Otherwise, I liked the narrator a lot. Thanks for the listen.

Incredible violence throughout the entire novel, but the heroine being the victim, became tedious and beyond ridiculous. The author seems to relish in creating a female character, who is battered up to one side, and down the other, only to emerge victorious in the last three minutes. With one exception, every male character was incredibly evil, insensitive, chauvinistic, and they all talked in the same voice. I will admit that I got caught up in this story, but it needed a lot more editing a lot less I’m free, I’m caught, I’m free, I caught episodes. By the end, I felt like I just spent 8+ hours entrenched in someone’s pity party.

Contains bad language, but it didn’t bother me because I knew how the character felt. Great story! Wish there were more.
