About this audiobook

She wanted purpose. She found dark magick and war.

For Claire Emerson, there is nothing ordinary about turning sixty.

First, there are the crows. Then, a pendant that unlocks a gate to a house in the woods--which comes with a snarky gargoyle, an entirely too-sexy wolf shifter claiming to be Claire's protector, and a legacy that turns her reality upside down.

Because divorced, menopausal grandmothers with creaky hips and hot flashes? They don't just randomly discover they're next in a long line of powerful women protecting the world from the dark magick of Mages.

Claire's first instinct is to turn tail and run back to the safety of baking cookies and reading bedtime stories. But when it becomes clear the Mages have targeted her, she may have no choice but to accept her calling. There's just one problem: she never got the lifetime of training she was supposed to have, and her magick is... well, unreliable would be an understatement.

With the Mages threatening everything she loves, can Claire learn what she needs to in time to become Crone? Or will she be the one to lose an ancient war—and her life?

Fast moving storyline with shifters gargoyles, and it has witches. What a good combination.

Absolutely freaking fantastic!!! Thank you for reminding this aging dreamer that there is still life beyond the "half-way" point.

The cat is okay! I just had to say that for us animal friends that dislike writers using furfriends to create horror or drama. When the book started I was surprised..did I hear it right?! The main character is 60.. not 16?!! I love it. Yes she is a bit of a pushover, but I think they did that to use it as character development.

I want to love this but if there is one thing I can't stand.... It is a protaganist that is whiny, lazy, weak and not confident for the ENTIRE BOOK. I like the world building, I like the magic and I like the companions. I love that the protaganist is 60yrs old but man... Why is she such a struggle? You mean to tell me she can't get her hands on some READING glasses for 27 chapters? Like come on. It's such a thin excuse and all the "training" gives her absolutely no mastery of anything ..... Still no mastery of ANYTHING even in the last pages. Why? I hate frustrating books. I hate constantly disagreeing with the protagonist and feeling like they have no common sense or sense of inner strength. It's just sucky. This had so much potential. I'm not going to be moving to book 2. It's gonna be a no for me.

What a great book. For someone like me in their 50s it's nice to see a hero that isn't in their 20s for a change.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it’s second, but reader beware there are four books in the series, and so far only two are available via audio

This is such a refreshing read, not about a teen coming of age, but of a woman coming into her own.

Very relatable. People generally behave in a realistic manner. MC is likable. Will read more by this author. Narrator is very good! I listened at 1.2x speed and it was perfect.

A woman turning 60 launches a new purposeful life by becoming a interval figure in the Crone wars. Really like the supernaturals in this book. Good neighborhood drama and a recently divorced Clare finding out she has been gifted with an important purpose; i am looking forward to the next in the series. Narrator was excellent also! Delivers anxiety well!

This was a totally engaging and fun book. Full of surprises and creative twists of plot. I love the idea that the main character is 60 years old and that she’s a powerful witch just discovering her powers.

Quite enjoyable. Usually I hate romance fantasy, but it wasn't sick making! The story was engaging and the characters too. Really liked Kevin and the Wards. Some nice strong female characters. Hope the next book develops the heroine and her power some more.

Good story but it could have been great if the main character wasn't so weak and stupid. If I, or anyone with common sense, discovered they had magical powers I would be over the moon excited and thrilled. Also only an idiot with zero functioning brain cells would choose to save a family member over saving the world from total destruction. Stupid and weak main characters are the worst.
