About this audiobook
Paul Tremblay’s terrifying twist to the home invasion novel—inspiration for the upcoming major motion picture from Universal Pictures
“Tremblay’s personal best. It’s that good.” — Stephen King
Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake. Their closest neighbors are more than two miles in either direction along a rutted dirt road.
One afternoon, as Wen catches grasshoppers in the front yard, a stranger unexpectedly appears in the driveway. Leonard is the largest man Wen has ever seen, but he is young, friendly, and he wins her over almost instantly. Leonard and Wen talk and play until Leonard abruptly apologizes and tells Wen, “None of what’s going to happen is your fault.” Three more strangers then arrive at the cabin carrying unidentifiable, menacing objects. As Wen sprints inside to warn her parents, Leonard calls out: “Your dads won’t want to let us in, Wen. But they have to. We need your help to save the world.”
Thus begins an unbearably tense, gripping tale of paranoia, sacrifice, apocalypse, and survival that escalates to a shattering conclusion, one in which the fate of a loving family and quite possibly all of humanity are entwined. The Cabin at the End of the World is a masterpiece of terror and suspense from the fantastically fertile imagination of Paul Tremblay.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a mixed bag. Some appreciate the different ending and the great job done by the narrator. However, others criticize the audio version, finding it dull and dreadful. Some readers feel that the book drags on and could have been paced better, while others love the plot and execution. There are complaints about the lack of conclusion and unresolved questions in the ending. Overall, opinions are divided, but there is a general appreciation for the compelling narrative and emotional impact of the story.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is just like every other Tremblay book - great in the beginning, awesome in the middle, then poof!- it’s like he lost interest in the book and ended with something blah and boring. It’s taken me three books but the third time is a charm and I learned my lesson. I’m staying away - fat fat away!

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5It was a very slow book. I thought there would be a lot more to it. I was disappointed when the ending came.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I wanted to read this book because I saw so many people had liked it but I will have to say that I didn't really like it at all. I have read some scary books and this one was not that scary to me. There are crazy people holding the occupants of the cabin as hostages but I thought it lacked real tension. I listened to the audio and it was during the day and maybe if I was home alone and it was at night then I'm sure I would have been a bit more nervous. So, if you read this one and you were scared then I would say, "Good for you!" If you haven't read it then maybe you should try it and see if it is scary enough for you. I just thought the whole story was rather strange. But I guess that's why they have so many flavors of ice cream!

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Saw the movie first which piqued my interest and was surprised how they differed with some events but enjoyed it.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5While there are a lot of themes at play here, their depth is questionable. As an exercise in a popular horror/thriller novel, this is very gripping. There's a definite emotional rollercoaster ride to this book that does lose some momentum halfway through due to the death of a certain character. An engaging story that doesn't wallow entirely in tropes. Recommended for those who aren't squeamish.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Horrible audiobook… couldn’t take it with her robot voice. ?
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5If I had known that the entire book consists of the characters arguing the same points, in the same room, from start to finish, I wouldn't have read it. Leonard & friends show up & expect the dads to make a huge, life-altering choice but never even explain the details of why they should be believed. I hoped for a thrilling, heart-pounding doomsday story but this isn't it. I kept hoping for more to happen but it never did. The ending literally made me yell, "WHAT?" as I'm left with no actual conclusion to the story. Side note: the narrator's "male" voice was comically sluggish, like a stoned surfer.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Highly over rated. I’m not a drama fan. I went into this book thinking it was a horror or thriller book. It is NOT. That said I liked it for what it was. If you like fast paced and action packed this isn’t it. It was a slog in that department. If I would’ve went into this with different expectations I may have a different opinion but I wasn’t in the mood for the slog of it and the sheer soap opera wordy and rhetorical drama. The ending was thought provoking and was the best part.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Interesting story. Awful ending. One of the worst narrations I’ve heard.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I didn’t care for this at all. It had an interesting premise, but the pacing of the story was very strange, and in some parts it was unclear who was actually narrating what.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This was just not my type of book. It felt too long and too short all at the same time. The book never really explains what is going on and uses pretty generic apocalypse themes.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed this quite a bit- it was extremely dialogue heavy which not a lot of books are anymore.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Wanted more from the ending . Not a fan of the ending at all. But it was a great story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very well written and with great pace! The book has you asking yourself what is really going on from page 1 to the ending. Definitely recommended IF you are ok with open endings.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book was awesome. I loved every moment of it had me up until the end.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Lots of pros so trying to shake away the feeling - as a gay guy - that this story feels homophobic.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great narration for a great novel. I’m so glad I gave time for it.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Don't get the hype.
I found this story predictable and not well written and the audio version an unpleasant listen. - Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5One star is for the audio version. Not the actual story itself. I tried to listen to the audiobook. It was horrible. Three minutes into Chapter 2, I stopped. The narrator’s voice is absolutely dull and dreadful. I thought it would change after the introduction but sadly it didn’t.
Oh well, I’ll have to make time to actually read this one. - Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Started interesting but ended up being very disappointing , open end that made no sense and felt like a waste of time.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The novel itself was ok, besides the annoying repetition at parts. The narrator absolutely butchered it though…especially the dialogue.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I liked this book and the fact that it has a different ending than the movie is great. The narrator did a great job as well.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5trembley always has such a good way of making you see both sides of the story, I always feel torn between the supernatural is actually happening or if it’s all in the characters heads. Another amazing story
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Choices were made with the narrator, if you change the speed to 1.2 it’s much more bearable. This is a rare moment where I’ll say I liked the movie better.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book haunted me for days after finishing. It's been over a month now, and it still pops into my head from time to time.
The author is excellent at sowing doubt in the reader's mind, and I found myself flipping from one side to the other throughout the story.
Some of the descriptions are graphic, but they are powerful and don't feel unnecessary.
I appreciate the thought and allegory that went into this book. I appreciate the constant guessing while keeping the plot very simple and straightforward. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I’m… a little conflicted here. On one hand, the narrative is compelling and entangling. I felt like the pacing could’ve been a bit better. It wasn’t too long, per se, but rather, I felt like more could’ve been explored in the story.

Wen’s death hurt me more than the death of a character in a long time. I actually felt myself grieving for someone that wasn’t real. I felt like her character was developed a lot more throughout the story than her dads’. While I could sympathize with Eric and Andrew, there was something deeply person about Wen that I wish I could’ve felt with each of the characters in this story.
Overall, I love the plot, and I feel like it was executed pretty well. My only complaint is that the psychological aspect could’ve been fleshed out a bit more.
I would definitely recommend this book to a friend, however! - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Was not a fan of the ending, it had a lot of build up to end that way. A lot of questions unanswered
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I don't know about anybody else but I rooted for the bad guys.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It was ok. Really lost me in the last half. Seemed like the narration took a way too metaphorical turn. Like one extremely long monologue from a side character that seemed unnecessary. Overall not bad. But wouldn't recommend.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I really enjoyed this book, now I can go see the movie. Hope it lives up to it.
