About this audiobook

College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. With deadlines looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson, and soon nothing in Joe's life is ever the same.

Carl is a dying Vietnam veteran-and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder.

As Joe writes about Carl's life, especially Carl's valor in Vietnam, he cannot reconcile the heroism of the soldier with the despicable acts of the convict. Aided by his skeptical neighbor, Lila, Joe throws himself into uncovering the truth. Thread by thread, he begins to unravel the tapestry of Carl's conviction. But as he and Lila dig deeper into the circumstances of the crime, the stakes grow higher. Will Joe discover the truth before it's too late to escape the fallout?

The narration on this book was fantastic. The storyline amazing. I give it four stars because the readability could have been better (so many literal “he said she saids”) and it could have done without the two short explicit sex scenes.

What an amazing read. Teaches us to question things and that not everything is as it seems. Loved the main characters and the smaller storylines within the large storyline. I also like the way this author describes things. Paints a very clear picture. Wonderful narration as well.

The first third or so of this novel was serious fiction done very well. Then the action took over, and I found myself wondering if I’d been wrong. I think not, though; I think the author had an editorial change of heart and settled on a more popular genre. Probably done better than most, but not nearly as interesting to me.

Not bad. One of those real life books with autistic brother and other real life difficulties not found in thrillers, but also with lots of action if unlikely, and some feeling.
