- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5(Maniac & Wren): TRIGGERS: attempted suicide, PTSD, rape. I really love this series so I don't know why I take such a long break between books. I loved this book. It starts out harshly and it is not for the weak of heart. It's almost like a prologue because then there's a time jump. Maniac is a member of the FLMC and has been assigned to watch over Wren. She's in a bad way and needs therapy. Maniac does what he can to help her recover and rejoin the land of the living. Learning what she'd been through was terrifying and heartbreaking but I loved how Maniac realized she needed to learn to trust him. Their love wasn't an insta romance or insta lust. It was a slow burn of savior, protector, to caregiver, to friend, to lover and it developed well. OMG and the FL ladies are freaking hilarious as usual, WT really knows how to cut the seriousness with a lot of laughter. Loved it.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Before I get started, I do want to say that this book does have some triggers for suicide attempts and sexual assault. If you think those things may bother you, then please make the responsible choice for yourself and either read consciously or check out another of Winter Travers' books.
Wren was used and abused by the Hells Captains. When she managed to get away, she went to her friend Cora and the Fallen Lords. After some time being safe with them, she just can't get over what happened to her and wanted to make it all go away, so she tried to kill herself. She thought that she would finally be done with everything, but Maniac breaks down the door and saves her life.
At first, Wren was nothing but a babysitting job to Maniac, but she started growing on him, and now he finds that he's attracted to her, and he wants to help her heal. Right now, the two of them are staying together in a tiny one-room cabin so that she's safe from the Hells Captains, and so that she can have time to get better.
I like the Fallen Lords guys. Wren keeps calling them Alpha, and they really are. They may be rough around the edges, but they are good guys, overall. Even if they have to do some really crappy things sometimes. Maniac does have an interesting way to deal with his problems, and I can't say that I don't like it. And, I want to know if I can be the smarta$$ next time.
