About this audiobook
On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person—but also that the cold-reading skills she’s honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money.
Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased…where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it.
Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware’s signature suspenseful style, this is a “captivating and eerie page-turner” (The Wall Street Journal) from the Agatha Christie of our time.
Editor's Note
Homage reaching new heights…
An homage to Daphne du Maurier’s “Rebecca” that starts on a dark and stormy night and continues to employ many classic tropes with contemporary twists. Ruth Ware (“In a Dark, Dark Wood,” “The Woman in Cabin 10”) reaches new heights in this novel.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a great mystery/thriller book with suspense and mystery woven throughout. The twists and turns keep readers engaged and wanting to know what happens next. The protagonist is likable and the narrator's voice is enjoyable. However, some readers found the story to be slow and boring, and felt that the author included too many unnecessary details. Overall, this book is recommended for those who enjoy engaging mystery novels with satisfying endings.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The story was pretty good but I couldn’t stand the narrator! She was waaaaayyyyy too mellow-dramatic and I felt myself cringe at nearly every line. However, the story was apparently good enough to keep listening to the end.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I loved The Woman in Cabin 10 but I think this book may be even better. The protagonist was very likable, but it was a guessing game figuring out the rest of the characters. Makes you want to skip ahead to see what happens, but at the same time you don’t want it to end!The narrator was also very enjoyable to listen to.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was the kind of book that you just can't put down, because it's that intense. I experienced anger, laughter, and sadness throughout the book - intense emotions, real emotions. That made the story come alive.
I appreciate that the author knows enough about tarot to write about in such a way, that I can relate. I loved how the readings played a part in solving the mystery of the story. It was beautiful.
I love how I was pretty sure I knew what was going on, and then after a shocking surprise, it turned out that I had no idea what was going on -- but that now, it made so much sense.
I kept going back and forth in my rating of four stars, to five stars, because this book isn't as special to me as Harry Potter is, or Lord of the Rings, or Alice in Wonderland. It doesn't hold that 'sacred' spot in my heart, as my favorites do. It's just not on the same level. However, the plot twists, character development, tarot imagery (that's probably what brought it to five stars for me), is fantastic! I could see myself reading this book again. So, that deserves a five-star reading.1 person found this helpful

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/53.5 stars. Entertaining, but the “twist” was not shocking. I feel as though I’ve read a similar thriller.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Mostly a waste of 15 hours. Characters like from a typical movie. The protagonist is always repeatedly thinking the same stuff: “was he lying?”....”was he lying?”......”what does this all mean?” Even about obvious things which the readers have figured a while back. And the repeated description of scenes over and over and over. Listened to the last 10 hrs in 2x speed. Could have been half the length. Aargh.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is my favorite book so far this summer. This book played me. I was both right and wrong, but by believing so completely that I knew where Ware was going with the story I was blind to the actual answer. This is by far my favorite Ware book to date. It has an Agatha Christie flare that I rather enjoyed. This will go on the shelf as a favorite. If you are looking for a bone chilling who dunnit this is the book for you!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow, that was the best book. I’ve read in a long long time. Ruth Ware is an amazing writer and of course Imogen church is wonderful to listen to. There are so many twists and turns in this story and I actually had to get a notepad to keep all the characters straight in this story, it was amazing 5+ stars. I just cannot say enough about how great this book was.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is the 5th Ruth Ware book I’ve read and this is the best but they are all good (except The Turn of the Key”, which I did not like). This book was extremely well written and Ware’s use of Tarot card reading was a wonderful way to show Hal’s (the main character) thought processes and ways of deducing information. 10 out of 10!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great listen. Happy to listen to more of her works.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Ruth Ware never disappoints! I would consider this a semi slow burn with a twisty turn drama packed ending! Perfect!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5My first Ruth Ware and won't be my last! What a cool spin on the "inheritance mystery" plot!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was a great read with some nice twists and turns!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very good read. Moves well and keeps you guessing. This is my second book by Ruth Ware and they were both very good mysteries roughly in the vein of Agatha. Read this one!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I have loved the author’s other books with their twists and turns and strong smart female leads. While many of the elements were there, this was not a particularly smart lead character and the ending was pretty obvious early on. This will not stop me from listening to the next Ruth Ware book though. And the person who reads all her books is fabulous. I seek out other books she has read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Kept me guessing til the end Great narration ,very easy to understand
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Mediocre story and waaaay too much drama and melodrama for my liking
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It was very slow and boring. It was ok, I would shout about it at rooftops.
