Henry D. Thoreau wurde am 12.7.1817 als Sohne eines französischstämmigen Fabrikanten in Concord, Massachusetts, geboren. Thoreau studierte von 1833 bis 1837 an der Harvard University, arbeitete für kurze Zeit als Lehrer, sowie als Betreiber einer Privatschule. Am 4.7.1845, dem Unabhängigkeitstag, zog er sich in seine selbstgebaute Behausung am Walden-See bei Concord zurück. Thoreau wurde nach einem Gefängnisaufenthalt, den er wegen Steuerschulden absitzen musste, zum Vorkämpfer in Sachen des zivilen Ungehorsams. Sein Leben bestritt er später durch Tätigkeiten als Gelegenheitsarbeiter und Vortragsreisender sowie als Landvermesser. Heute ist er uns bekannt als amerikanischer Schriftstelle und Philosoph. Henry D. Thoreau verstarb am 6.5.1862 in seiner Geburtsstadt Concord.
