Creative Writing:Character Archetypes of theSeven Deadly Sins - Rebecca Hartley-Wright
Introduction
Some of the most highly regarded works of literature in the history of the western world, such as The Canterbury Tales, (Geoffrey Chaucer, 1343-1400), The Fairie Queen, (Edmund Spenser, 1552-1599), Paradise Lost, (John Milton, 1608-1674) and The Divine Comedy (Alighieri Dante, 1265-1321), contained themes relating to sin and virtue in respect of both society and human nature. Amongst these literary masterpieces, there are clear portrayals of character that lend themselves directly to the seven deadly sins.
In consideration of the above, this book aims to describe some of the main personality traits associated to each of the seven deadly sins. These are intended to allow the creative writer to build multi-faceted archetypal characters for use within their own work.
The following pages begin with a brief history of the seven deadly sins and advice of how to develop new characters. Following this, there are a set of useable archetypes for each sin that will help provoke and inspire the creative writing process.
