Lenin for Lovers - Rosemary Aubert
Lovers
like
two great circles
crossing.
One is red
or yellow
or orange.
One is blue
or green.
Or they are different shades
of one colour.
But where
the circles
intersect
they flash
all the wild spectrums
of light
and
become
indefinable colours
or no colour
or invisible
or they are one shade
of one colour.
EX-WIVES
The ghosts are lovely in their season.
Lean in long white dresses, their flower faces
their hair a drape of innocent surmise,
they walk on feet too light
to make a sound.
In candlelight they offer honeyed wine;
their lips are butterflies.
They hesitate in corridors
that lead to virgin beds
and night by night give up
the white-lace gift.
The hands of ghosts are smooth like cream
fragile as unbuttered toast.
And breakfast made by such a waif
sustains, negates the sordid day
that separates.
At evening they are always ready,
their little hands hold back the curtain,
they run to willing arms.
And the whole mean world melts
in the caramel of their embrace.
Later, they grow bored and hard
shrill in their kitchens
unyielding in bed.
Eventually they move to someone else’s home.
But they never die.
A wind-tossed curtain conjures up their gowns.
The smell of spring unleashing sap
calls back their tender fragrance.
The ghosts are lovely in their season,
lean in the wishing chambers
of the heart.
HARVEST
A woman with a broken heart
is picking beans in my garden.
Her hands rifle leaves.
She is not gentle
believing that all things
that begin in the earth
are strong.
What she finds she snaps
off the plant
with one sure twist.
She is harvesting
what she
