Chapter1
Sitting in a B24 Liberator I tried to remain relaxed. There was a constant monotone sound roaring from the aircrafts engines as I sat down on the floor inside the aircraft. The aircraft continued to shudder gently every now and then as we flew through the clouds high in the night sky above Yugoslavia. I had to be honest. I was shitting myself. I ran my long fingers through my black coloured hair repeatedly. Whenever I did that, I knew I was shitting myself. I mean I had been on some pretty dangerous missions before but this was different. This time I was blind. I was being airdropped completely blind behind enemy lines. The drop zone was in Croatia. The year was 1943; it was April to be exact. This mission was of critical importance, it was personally approved by Churchill himself. My mission involved liaising with the Chetniks and the Communist Partisans to find out what the fuck was going on down there. There had been rumours the Chetniks were collaborating with various Axis forces whilst the Partisans were copping the full brunt of the latest Axis offensive. I had to find out. Who do we support? The Chetniks or the Partisans? I recall the moment when I was offered this mission. I was excited and scared at the same time but it also represented something I believed in; to make a meaningful difference in the fight against Fascism and National Socialism. I found myself drifting back to the briefing I’d had with my Colonel when I was offered this mission.
Captain Thomas Walters. You have proven yourself not only as a Commando but you have excelled in your SAS training. You’ve demonstrated quite an aptitude for learning Serbian and Croatian. Your personal standards of excellence are incredible. It has been duly noted.
I knew he was about to offer me something big after filling me with all those superlatives.
I have something big for you if you’ll accept it. This comes all the way from Churchill.
He shuffled forward in his chair, the leather croaking as he moved. His eye contact intense.
Well, what is it then Sir?
I’ve got a special mission for you all the way in Yugoslavia. The guys at the top are looking at an invasion of the place. As I’m sure you’re already aware of there are two resistance groups down there fighting the Germans, the Chetniks under General Draza Mihailovic and the Communist Partisans under Marshal Josip Broz Tito. We need to find out whom to support.
Aren’t we already supporting the Chetniks Sir? And what about the other missions that have been sent down there?
He shuffled back into the back of his seat now, again the leather croaking as he shuffled back.
Yes, yes, we are already supporting them but the situation has changed only recently down there. Since January the Germans and Italians have been on a major offensive against the resistance forces down there. Only problem is we are getting rumours that the Chetniks are in fact collaborating with the Germans to destroy the Partisans. See the problem now?
I nodded, Yes I do Sir.
Want the mission?
I smiled, keeping my lips pressed together.
Yes.
Of course I wanted it. What an opportunity. An opportunity I’d been looking for. Here was a real chance to make a meaningful difference in the fight against the evils of Fascism and National Socialism. I’d enjoyed the opportunities to fight when I was a Commando but this was really something else. The reason I accepted the offer to join the SAS was for opportunities like this.
I thought you’d say yes.
He grinned. Your mission is quite simple. Liase with the Chetniks and find out what is going on with them then liaise with Tito’s Partisans. We need to know definitively who to support. This mission is of vital importance.
Yes, Sir.
And that was it. That was how I got the opportunity for this mission. Now here I was sitting in a B24 Liberator shitting myself as I sat on the floor of the aircraft. I tried not to think too much and just focus on what I was to do. The Chetniks I was liaising with should not be far from the drop zone. I was to communicate with them by way of Morse code using my flashlight once I made it to the rendezvous point. Just focus on the mission. Just focus on the mission. I kept telling myself. As much as I tried it didn’t get rid of those little butterflies flying around in the pit of my stomach. Then my thoughts were distracted by the illuminating glow of the red light onboard the cabin of the aircraft. Fuck, we were approaching the drop zone. If I didn’t think
