My Boyfriend's Wife PT 1 - Mychea

Chapter 1

Christmas Eve 2007

Thanks to a teenage girl, whose headphone volume had to be dialed up to the highest notch it could go, Mariah Carey’s ‘All I want for Christmas’ serenaded everyone on the rush hour train leading from the city into the suburbs. A frustrated Ananda ran her fingers through her short curly hair as a woman pushing her baby in a stroller rolled over her foot for the fifth time in less than two minutes. She was standing in the middle of the aisle on the Orange Line train holding onto the bar above her headed toward her stop at New Carrollton Station, which as far she was concerned, couldn’t come soon enough.

Hello. Ananda yelled into her phone after feeling it vibrate in her hand.

What you doing? Her friend Tracey asked her.

What Tray? I can barely hear you. Ananda said before her signal died on her cell. Tracey knew that she was on the train. She called at the same time everyday expecting a different result. Ananda chuckled quietly to herself at her crazy friend and prayed for her stop to come a little faster.

Ten minutes later Ananda was in her car Skeeter headed home; she loved her some Skeeter. Skeeter was a 1998 green Buick Regal and they had been through a lot together. Ananda was riding with the windows down because it felt like it was100 degrees outside confirming what she had been long telling her friends, that the world was soon coming to an end. There was no reason it should be this hot in the state of Maryland in December and on top of that Skeeter’s air had been broken for the last two years. Ananda wanted to fix her, but funds were tight and she was barely making it as it was. Fixing the air conditioning in her car was the least of her worries when she was more concerned with keeping the lights on in her apartment. But in spite of it all, Christmas was her favorite time of the year and even though she was tired she was anxious to get home to wrap the remaining gifts she had for her family and boyfriend.

Waiting at the light on Route 450, Ananda tilted her head back onto the headrest and closed her eyes as the heat threatened to smother her. She couldn’t wait to get home on the other side of town across the bridge in Alexandria, Virginia, but she had told her mother that she would stop by for a few minutes. Her mother had made some of her amazing chicken salad and had set aside a portion for her to take home and by no means could she pass up on such a treat.

Hey Ma! Ananda yelled as she walked into the unlocked door of her mother’s condo. As usual, she had it unlocked and waiting for her after she’d heard her pull up.

Hey boo. Did you have your music loud enough? I heard you get off the highway and start heading this way five minutes ago. Ananda shook her head smiling as she gave her mom a kiss on the cheek and went to wash her hands in the sink. This woman could find an excuse to fuss about any and everything, if you say the moon is shining she would say it could be brighter if a cloud wasn’t blocking it.

You know I like to get my party on in my ride. Ananda laughed as she picked up a spoon from the counter and reached for the big bowl of chicken salad sitting on the table.

Her mom smacked her arm lightly, Girl I know if you don’t get that spoon away from my bowl there’s going to be problems. Yours is in the fridge.

Why can’t I have some of this one? Ananda asked in mock indignation.

Because I said so, now get yours and leave this one alone. Ananda placed the spoon back on the table.

Yes ma’am. As soon as her mother turned her back she grabbed the spoon and snuck a small spoon full into her mouth and then headed toward the dining room.

Your mail is on the table in there. Her mother yelled from the kitchen, and I saw you get some chicken salad, you not slick. Don’t you touch it again she warned.

Ananda burst into laughter as she chewed what was left in her mouth and retrieved her mail off the table. One of these days, she was really going to have to forward her mail to her apartment.

Okay Ma, I’m out. I’m tired and I still have to drive across town. Christmas is tomorrow, don’t forget. Ananda teased.

Right, like you would allow me to forget. See you tomorrow. Her mother yelled out after her.

Back in Skeeter Ananda was anxious for some chill time. She made it home in record time. Upon entering the serenity of her apartment, Ananda left her shoes and purse at the door and immediately plugged in the lights that brought her Christmas tree to life. Flopping onto her chenille chocolate sofa to relax for a moment Ananda glanced at the Rolex sitting on her coffee table that she had splurged over nineteen hundred dollars to buy for her boyfriend Braxton. He loved watches and this year she wanted to do something really nice for him, especially since she anticipated him doing something special for her in return. She’d started saving since last Christmas and even though it wasn’t the most expensive Rolex out there, it was still a Rolex and she knew that he would be excited about it. Leaning her head back onto the cushions Ananda promptly felt her eyes begin to close. She had to admit that she was tired as she decided to give in to a wave of sleepiness coming over her.

A few moments later her ringing cell phone jarred her out of her light slumber. Standing slowly and starting toward her purse, she felt as if someone had drugged her. Seeing Braxton’s name flash across her screen seemed to reenergize her and Ananda’s mood picked up a little as well. She loved her delicious man. They had been dating for two years and she just knew that any day now he would be proposing.

Hey babe. You felt me missing you? She purred into the receiver.

Nah not really. Hey I gotta talk to you for a minute.

Ananda was taken aback by his brashness. I mean. Don’t mind my feelings any. Geez. What’s going on? She asked with an attitude. Just that fast Braxton had irritated her after she had been so happy to hear from him.

It’s not you, it’s me. He began.

Huh? Ananda was confused, What are you talking about? What do you mean? It’s not me it’s you, wha—?

Me, you, us. he said stopping her, This thing we got going is not working for me.

Ananda narrowed her eyes in disbelief at the phone in her hand as Braxton uttered those words to her. Seriously? After all this time together that’s the best you can do? Voice laced with enough venom to kill him with the mere bite of her words she continued, "You don’t feel like you owe me just a little more than
