    FOREWORD

This book was borne from a long-term partnership between our two great Boston institutions. The cultural heritage of Boston and the history of the Red Sox are permanently intertwined. The Red Sox have been a significant part of the cultural fabric of the city ever since the franchise first played at the Huntington Avenue Grounds in 1901. The Boston Public Library, in its efforts to preserve Boston’s cultural heritage and promote lifelong learning, has an unparalleled collection of historical Red Sox images. By creating the Galleries at Fenway Park, we are presenting these rarely seen images to Red Sox fans visiting Fenway Park. This book is based on one gallery located at the park’s Autograph Alley, a display that shows Red Sox legends through the years.

We hope you enjoy this book, and we remind you to bring it with you when you visit the park. We have included pages at the back for the autographs you receive when you meet the legends of Red Sox history on your visits to America’s Most Beloved Ballpark. We also remind you to enjoy reading the greatest collection of books about baseball that you can find. They are all ready and waiting for you, now, at your Boston Public Library. Come visit.

    INTRODUCTION

All my father ever talked about was Ted Williams, the greatest player to ever play the game. His memories of Williams brought him back to his childhood, the time when he first fell in love with baseball.

As a kid growing up in Somerset, I couldn’t help but become a Red Sox fan. The 1967 Red Sox drew me in as a young teenager and made me a Sox fan for life. I went to opening day that year. The Sox played their way into the World Series, and, like most people in New England, I was locked in on them. Watching the Red Sox mount comeback after comeback in 1967 taught me that you can never lose faith. That’s the magic of Red Sox baseball.

Every citizen of Red Sox Nation has a unique story about how the team, a game, or a player touched their lives. For my dad, it was Williams. For me, it was Yaz and that 1967 team.

In the pages that follow, you will find photographs taken by Leslie Jones and other Red Sox photographers who captured the moments and players that are part of Red Sox history. Along with the images, you will read personal accounts from players discussing their own Red Sox memories and how the team, the game, and that famous ballpark have shaped their lives. Enjoy the book.

The Boston Red Stockings were charter members of the National Association of Baseball (later changed to the National League). They were quite successful until the opening of Boston’s entry in the competing American League, the Boston Americans. Shown here is the 1900 team, called the Boston Beaneaters. In 1900, this team went 66-72, had a winning percentage under .500, and finished fourth in the league. Many of the players pictured went on to play for the Boston Americans when they were offered better contracts to play in the new league. The Beaneaters (later the Braves) suffered mightily over the ensuing years, until 1914 when they stunned the league by going from last place to first place in less than two months and winning the World Series.
