LEARNING BY COACHING

BASIC LEVEL
No matter what you know
but how you handle it
'Tell me and I forget,
teach me and I may remember,
involve me and I learn.'.
(Benjamin Franklin)
Introduction
Theory is when you know everything but nothing works
A. Einstein
Every opportunity was good. A first division coach doing practice or National team coach in a clinic? Summer tournament with european teams? Curiosity, desire to understand, to know more to explore a new world. Too much patience to read Taurisano’s books, so the research was even more adventurous and less systematic. 300 km to see coach Pitino, a real show of energy, ideas tricks. Someone of us, young coaches, jumped to Pitino’s fake from the tribune. We were shocked. Incredibly interested in his way to be a coach.
Problems with pressing? Issues against half court defense? Doug Moe and his Denver Nuggets had the solution for everything: fast break. Old times, after the courses you spoke like a professor. Passing game, run and jump, box and 1. After an hard clinic you felt like Bobby Knight, always screaming to your players. You hate Celtic pride and try to emulate Lakers sets for your own team…12 year old guys!
Respect the Game
You played thousands of games, ran practices, had wins and losses, with a living desire to understand and know more about the game. Even now, when you attend the coach classes, and you identify yourself with your younger colleague's anxiety and presumption, write about basketball is very hard. Because basketball is like life, it cannot be enclosed in just one page. The Game
is a big mystery we have to respect.
Do it your way
We won’t even try it. You can easily find thousands of books, clinics, lessons and videos. Here, we will try to set up a very ambitious operation: write down a map, find out signals to not loose orientation, find your personal way to travel. You have to consider this book as an adventure companion which helps you clarifying your approach, finding a way, your way. It will help you to make a logic and personal summary of all the informations you have, to propose it to your players, whether young or adult they are. We will try to create a solid castle to resist against objections or critics.
In the court together with you
In short, we won’t talk theory, maybe we will be unsophisticated and we will turn up someone’s noses, but here, our target is not to give a display of competence or to show off special effects to solve with magic wand every difficult situation. We want instead to come in with you, to help you be a more effective and appreciated coach. How? With technique and tactics for sure, but is different to play the role of the expert, connoisseur or even worse the commentator sit in the stands; or be in the the court, with the responsibility to drive your guys, solve issues, overcome hard moments. We will be by your side while you are training, sharing problems already met trying to help. Without forgetting that experience is nothing more than the amount of errors made, it is a light attacked back illuminating the path already done. This is not enough to light the next stretch of road, you have to give yourself a challenge and stand on your own legs, a little bit more ready to face the unexpected issues.
A bird in hand and two in the brush
A famous quote says: "give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime". First of all we are still hungry people; then we want try to do both things: to immediately give you tools to allow you be operative (fish) and in the mean time, think about the game, study in deep methods and contents to develop your potential as coach (teach you fishing). These are even too much premises for us, and this is also our first suggestion: few talks and straight to our goal. Let’s go to the court!
Where the heck do we start from?
The starting point is just you, your capacities, your competences and your motivations. Being aware of yourself is already a good beginning, but you will surely see that
