Ludovico Scarfiotti (October 18, 1933-June 8, 1968) drove Formula One and sports cars in his race career. Born in Italy Scarfiotti was recruited to join the Ferrari F1 team in 1962 by Enzo Anselmo Ferrrari (February 18, 1898-August 14, 1988), head of the esteemed automaker. Over the years his Ferrari teammates included John Surtees (born February 11, 1934), Willy Mairesse (October 1, 1928-September 9, 1969), Lorenzo Bandini (December 21, 1935-May 10, 1967) and Nino Vaccarella (born March 4, 1933).
In 1966 Ludovico Scarfiotti became the first Italian to win the Italian Grand Prix in fifteen years. His track speed at Monza was a record 136.7 miles per hour (220 km/h). He remains the only Italian to
have won the Italian GP at Monza.
Born in Turin Scarfiotti was the fashionably dressed nephew of Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli. He began his career driving a Fiat 1100cc touring car in which he won his class in the 1957 Mille Miglia. His racing reputation was boosted by respectable finishes driving an OSCA sports car. Ludovico developed a talent for hill climbing at a time when Ferrari and Porsche's participation in this sport made it especially popular in Europe.
After Lorenzo Bandini died from burns he sustained at Monaco, Scarfiotti and Mike Parkes of England were entered in the 1967 Syracuse Grand Prix by Enzo Ferrari. Their cars finished in a dead heat, crossing the finish line at the same time. Both drivers shared this win.
James Jim Clark Jr. (March 4, 1936-April 7, 1968) and Ludovico Scarfiotti were among the
European drivers to enter the American 500 stock car race at Rockingham, North Carolina in October 1967. Considered the world's finest driver on an open course, Clark had this to say about running NASCAR. If twenty
