Still Seeing Through The Smoke

About this ebook
This latest collection is a selection of Pete Wilky's brand of modern poetry and verse. This is the second book in a trilogy of poetry books covering various topics and subjects dealing with the issues we all face on a daily basis, whether they are societal, personal, professional or hierarchical. His brand of poetry is straight-talking and doesn't pull its punches but it is also inspirational and humorous in places too. He has developed into a fine beat-poet and this latest body of work reveals much more of his versatility as a writer and as an observer of this often tumultuous world which we all inhabit. He remains completely and wholeheartedly committed to the causes of freedom of choice, freedom of opinion and freedom of expression.

Still Seeing Through The Smoke - Pete Wilky
1. Strike A Chord.
sometimes we meet someone who really strikes a chord
they somehow leave us dumbfounded and drop-jawed
they're spontaneous, infectious and full of life's surprise
they appeal to our nicer nature and open up our eyes
so our faith in the human species is suddenly restored
'cause sometimes we meet someone who really strikes a chord!
2. Karma.
karma has a habit of slapping people's faces
it reminds them that they're stupid and puts them in their places
karma doesn't care if you're female or you're male
'cos karma will kick your arse when stupidity prevails
karma won't forget, it'll wait until time's right
and when you're least expecting it will turn around and bite
it'll punish you for failure or letting people down
'cos that's what karma does 'cos karma holds the crown
it's the king of retribution, pay-back by the ton
and the thing is, when karma comes you've nowhere left to run
it'll find you if you hide and it'll expose you to your peers
it'll hit you fucking hard and leave a ringing in your ears
so the best way to avoid it is don't play games with people's trust
just be fucking honest since honesty's a must
bullshit fools only fools and only fools bullshit
which is pretty fucking obvious unless you're slightly dim of wit
so don't get caught up in your fiction and keep it fucking real
or karma will come and kick your arse until you fucking squeal!
3. Visiting Mother.
it's time for a brew and a visit with my mother
she sometimes does my head in but she knows i love her
she'll repeat what shes just told me and then repeat it again
it's like a fucking echo deep in my brain
that constant feeling of deja-vu
but at least she makes a decent brew
she can barely remember where she's left her purse
and her mobility is slow and getting worse
but her memory's so clear with names and with dates
she can tell you the year, the time and the place
who said what to who and when
and she's a tongue as mighty as any pen
she says what she likes and doesn't hold back
with her white is white and black is black
she's 73 now and looking her age
but when it comes to queens she's centre-stage
i think she's proud of me since i'm her 'rock'
i just wish there were more hours on her clock
so i savour the time that we spend together
and i'll keep her memories alive forever!
4. Eight Years.
It's eight years since you died Dad, oh how time has passed
it just seems to disappear and disappear so fast
we wish that you were here with us for just one final day
so we could tell you how we felt before you went away
to show you what you meant to us would be a dream come true
but until we meet again Dad we'll raise a glass to you
sleep well in your slumber and I'll see you when I die
riding on a big white cloud somewhere in the sky.
5. Chasing Dreams.
If you're sick and tired of chasing dreams
or wondering where you're going
then just work out what your future means
and forget what's not worth knowing
for too much information
will weigh heavy on your mind
it'll steal your imagination
and take away your shine
it'll burden you with worry
leave you living life in doubt
and it'll remind you in a hurry
that's not what life's about
life is not a dreamlike state
it's reality and it's brutal
but unless you rest and contemplate
that brutality will be more brutal
you'll be left in your confusion
bereft of your guiding light
so maybe select a solution
and you might just be alright
keep hope within your heart
and passion in your soul
to find that motivation
for you to reach your goal
you'll get there if you really try
and when you do you'll see
that chasing dreams is futile
so let your mind roam free
be who you are and what you are
be you and no one else (cont.)
and I swear my friend that you'll go far
as a reflection of yourself
people will admire you
because you inspire them
and happily they'll hire you
to be their new best friend
so if you're sick of chasing dreams
or wondering where you're going
then just work out what your future means
and forget what's not worth knowing.
6. A Flame That Needs A Fire.
When you look into the mirror who is it you see
is it who you really are or who you'd wish to be
do you question how you look or are you safe within your skin
aware of all your faults and flaws but proud of what's within
is the person that you've now become a person you admire
or are you still a work-in-progress like a flame that needs a fire
When you look into the mirror who is looking back
is it a true and fair reflection or do wish the glass would crack
does disappointment haunt you and rob you of your dreams
leave you looking slightly gaunt despite your hopes and schemes
'cause if the person that you've become ain't a person you admire
you'll always be work-in-progress like a flame that needs a fire.
7. State Intimidation.
They've finally took the gloves off for the fight has just begun
and it seems that civil-liberties has seen the setting of its sun
now the state just wants to own you and keep you as its slave
repossess your property once you've given all you've gave
They're taking all your earnings and making rich men richer
they've misinformed the masses and distorted every picture
because the state has chose to own you to be their willing slave
so unless you save yourselves there'll be no one left to save
They've broken our communities and sold them all for profit
like hell-bent fucking lunatics for every scale they're off it
because the state just wants to own you and keep you as its slave
control the things you do from your cradle to your grave
They lie on television when it's nearing an election
for fear that their truth would face ridiculed rejection
for the state just wants to own you and keep you as its slave
obediently march ahead along the path that they have paved
They have now given the police every conceivable weapon
so they no longer protect they just bully and threaten
since the state just wants to own you and keep you as its slave
remember you are animals and your keeper's name is 'Dave'
But you're better than this and despite your occupation
you do not deserve this state intimidation
for you are not a slave, you're free to rule yourself
only the foolish not the brave put their trust in someone else!
8. A Feline Friend.
If you're gonna get a flat-mate get a cat
and get a Siamese one at that
they like four-legged humans with fur
and they're very vocal and they frequently purr
but they'll crave for all your time and all of your attention
and you'll carry them more times than you'll care
