This book traces the history of sexual freedom enjoyed by people in different cultures and civilizations, right from the early civilizations, to the present day,

Preface
Free sex
or sexual liberation is by no means a modern phenomenon. Several pre-industrial, and even pre-agrarian and communities had no qualms about premarital and extramarital sex, group sex, and even wife swapping. Men have always acted upon the natural urge for sex outside the traditional confines of marriages imposed by society from time to time. In fact, the guilt-laden
approach to free sex imposed by religion is of relatively recent origin, and the definition of what constitutes vice
or sin
has undergone a sea change over the years.
The acceptability of premarital or extramarital sex as a norm varies among individuals, and cultures, from time to time. Most western cultures of the past, until the advent of Christianity, were quite open regarding sex did not consider chastity as a virtue. Promiscuity or free sex was regarded as normal in pre-Christian North American communities, and African tribes, with the onus of raising children falling on the community or the village. Much of the modern free-love tradition traces back to such an approach, and also reflects a libertarian philosophy seeking freedom from the regulations imposed by state and religion.
ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS
Compulsory Prostitution in Mesopotamia
Mesopotamia or the area comprising of present day Iraq, eastern Syria, South Eastern Turkey and South West Iran is the Cradle of Civilization
, or the place where the first literate communities developed. By 6000 B.C. a thriving Sumerian civilization flourished in these lands.
A key feature of the Sumerian religious practice was the annual festival at the temple of Bel at Babylon, and probably in other temples in other cities. These festivities were marked by unbridled fun, gaiety, and merry-making, with music and dancing the norm. The wine was freely drunk and passion excited to the hilt, with revelries culminating in wild orgies. Free sexual indulgences were the norm in such revelries and orgies.
In another notable tradition, each woman was required to visit the temple of Beltis once in her lifetime, and remain there until any stranger cast money in her lap and took her away with him. These women veiled themselves and sat within the holy enclosure of the temple, as strangers passed along them and made their choice. A woman who once took the seat was not allowed to return home until one of the strangers threw a silver coin into her lap, and took her with him, beyond the holy ground, to have sex. It was forbidden by law for the women to refuse the silver coin, and the women had to go with the first man who threw the money, rejecting no one. Naturally, tall and beautiful women had to spend very little time in the temple before they could go home, whereas relatively ugly women had to wait much longer, in some instances as long as three to four years, before they could leave the precinct.
There was also a custom of bride auction, where all women eligible to be married were gathered in the village square, and auctioned off to the highest bidder.
Open Sex in Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egyptians were not far off from their Sumerian counterparts when it came to open sex. Men and women, both
