John Steinbeck (1902-1968) is an American writer whose works (including Of Mice and Men, 1937; The Grapes of Wrath, 1939; East of Eden, 1952) are drawn together by their setting in the author’s home-state of California and their themes of hardship among rural populations. Steinbeck worked as a reporter for the International Herald Tribune during the Second World War, and was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962.
