The Perfect Bite
By J.D. Walker
Dicknosis is the hottest vampire club in the city. I’ve been employed there as a sort of boy Friday ever since it opened ten years ago. Five years before that, vampires had come out to the world, and it had been a bit of a shock.
All those books, TV shows and movies had nothing on the real thing. I was eighteen when it happened, and while my parents and fellow students in high school had been horrified, I’d been intrigued. Finally, I wasn’t the only freak of nature in the world.
The town I grew up in—hell, the world I’d inhabited back then—had been full of sameness. Anyone who remained there as an adult became a farmer, mechanic, or some such. Not that my current job is glamorous, but I at least get to be around people who don’t judge me because I am less than perfect.
I have a birthmark that covers the right side of my face. It’s purple and has gotten darker with age. Since my skin is really pale, that blemish is like being branded and can’t be hidden. My parents were working class, religious folk who’d thought that I’d been marked by the devil until a doctor disabused them of that ridiculous notion.
I had worn thick glasses, too, been ostracized at school, and barely tolerated by my family, all because I wasn’t the image of the farm-fed, blond-haired perfection of my brothers and sisters. With that kind of experience, it was no wonder I was a loner and quiet. By the time I graduated from high school, I was more than ready to move on to someplace where no one knew me and wouldn’t care what I looked like, or my background.
I left home and spent five years roaming from place to place. And then, I met Pierre Sangre, the vampire who saved my life and gave me a job. I owed him my loyalty, and the night of the incident, I fell in love, forever…
