Forty, Fluffy, and Fabulous - Ava Catori
Chapter 1
Brandy gunned the accelerator and hit the sirens. A wild ruckus was taking place at St. Luke’s church, just off of Hulmeville Road. One of her co-workers was already there and had called for back-up. Gravel and dust flew behind her as she spun to a stop. The hot August afternoon wasn't doing her any favors when it came to catching her breath. As soon as she stepped out of the police cruiser, she sucked steamy air into her lungs. The humidity smacked her like a wet fish, leaving her wishing for the climate controlled air conditioning of her car.
Brandy assessed the situation in the parking lot. Fists and fury flew between multiple groups. Another family get-together celebrating the blessed union of husband and wife. Between the hair-pulling, screaming and cursing, she spotted her fellow officers and corralled a second group.
Brandy jumped between the bride, who was fully flocked in lace, and one of her bridesmaids. The bridesmaid was easily carpeted in enough lavender taffeta to curtain the White House. The women were trying to kick and slap one another. Brandy yelled over the chaos. Ladies, break it up!
CRACK! She didn’t see it coming, but when the force of the blow hit her in the face, Brandy started to stumble. She caught herself and centered her gravity.
The bride had cold cocked her. Pissed, Brandy shook the sting off, then swept her leg under the bride's feet. The bride buckled and fell to the ground amidst a plethora of four letter words. As she stumbled, she grabbed the dress of the bridesmaid, tearing it. The second woman went down with her. A tangle of satin and ruffles hit the pavement.
The yelling and name calling started again. You lousy cheating...
Brandy groaned. This was the last thing she felt like doing in the searing hot August sun. A dip in a cool, refreshing pool, or maybe an ice cold cocktail, but this...?
The bride's flaming red hair was an unnatural shade that could only be found in a box. Brandy’s stomach flip-flopped. She’d seen that color before. She cringed before rolling the woman over.
Crap.
She recognized the woman in the bride’s gown immediately. Brandy reached behind her and grabbed her cuffs from her gear belt. With a slap of the handcuffs, she had the woman under control. Helping the beast to her feet, she grumbled under her breath. Figures she’d be the one dealing with her.
Let me go,
the bride screamed at the top of her lungs. It's my wedding day.
Brandy turned to the red-headed woman and scowled. Of all the people in the world.
Henry McAllen caught a glimpse of his new bride cuffed beside Brandy. His whiny, nasal voice cut through the air as he hollered. Brandy, stop! It's my wedding day. You can’t do this!
Brandy shook her head and grounded herself. He was the last person she wanted to see. There he stood, all wishy-washy in his rented tuxedo, flapping his arms like a chicken in heat. She was in no mood to deal with Henry, especially now. Back off, Henry. This isn’t the time.
Henry, the very Henry on whom Brandy wasted three years of her life, stood before her, red-faced and bellowing about his bride. His new wife was the same Amazonian eight-footed, red-headed girl, with big fake boobs she’d found in her bed two years ago. The same woman Henry had been screwing for apparently two years...two of the three years Brandy had been in a relationship with him.
Every bit of that relationship was a lie. While she mostly walked away unscathed, no marriage to break-up, no children to make matters worse, she did lose her ability to trust. Everything she thought she knew...every single bold-faced lie he spewed...not that it mattered any more. Enough time had passed that she could see she'd dodged a bullet. Once a cheater, always a cheater.
Get out of my way, Henry,
she growled at her ex.
Brandy led the bride to her cruiser. Opening the back door, she shoved the woman's overblown dress in behind her. Layers of lace and tulle fluffed up next to the disgruntled woman.
When she glanced back at the gaggle of people, she noticed her parents. Her parents! Not only were they there, they never even mentioned he was getting married. She huffed angrily under her breath. Seriously? Her mother caught a glimpse of Brandy, held eye contact for a moment, and then looked down, like a small child who was caught with her hand in the cookie jar. Brandy didn’t have time to deal with this. Later. She’d deal with it later.
Fate was a cruel mistress, but karma was a downright bitch.
Brandy got into the police cruiser and turned the air conditioner on high. Bucks County was having a raging heat wave. After just a few minutes out of the car, she was soaked with sweat. Brandy keyed up her radio and called in her location. Her estimated time of arrival to the Bensalada police station was six minutes. Franklin and Charlie, the other officers, wouldn't be far behind. Now that the crowd was clearing out, they were able to leave the scene.
Disorderly conduct,
she cited into the radio, and clocking a police officer.
A familiar voice came over the radio as dispatch took the information. Once she’d finished calling in her status into emergency dispatch, she fixed the radio to the in-house crew. Gertie, I'll be in shortly. I need to process the woman I have in custody. Can you grab me a bag of ice? The bitch sucker punched me.
Henry banged at her car door, before she could pull away. Brandy grumbled and rolled down her window. Your bride will be at the station. I'm leaving.
You can't do this. It's our wedding day. This is personal, you know it,
he squealed.
Personal? You mean, me finding her in our bed two years ago? Or the fact that you'd been cheating on me for longer than I'd like to admit? No, Henry, you did me a favor. This is not personal. This is about a woman who just slugged a law enforcement officer.
She ignored his pleas and rolled her window back up.
Jackass.
Brandy pulled away and drove to the police station. On arrival, she escorted the cuffed bride inside. Sit here,
she instructed. She opened one of the cuffs and fastened it to the steel loop attached to the bench.
Want to do me a solid, Gertie?
Brandy asked, now regretting that she was thrown into this mess. You write and I'll talk. I'm going to ice up, clock out, and head to the bar. It's been a long day."
You've got it. I'm ready when you are.
Gertie said, pulling down a file. They made a paper report, which was then entered into the data system. Gertie was a solid but short woman in her middle sixties, nearing retirement. She pulled out her
