CHAPTER 1
He never thought it would be this crazy but things were getting out of hand – way out of hand. The never ending paternity suits, multitude of gun and drug charges, and countless brawls were testing Darwin Hunt’s patience. Worse than that, the felonious assaults and mini riots, not to mention a few missed tour dates, made it painfully clear to Darwin that his cousin, the great rapper Cocky P, was running out of time and squandering most of his money.
What remained of Cocky’s career wasn’t going to be able to sustain many more body blows and with the way he was burning through his cash he’d be flipping burgers before new artists would have the chance to label him ol’ school
.
Still, Darwin found it difficult to watch the slow destruction of the brand and life CP, whose real name was Curtis Powers, had worked so hard to build. Not knowing what to do to correct his cousin’s behavior, Darwin was at his wits end.
All he could think about was the look on his Aunt Mabel’s face as she lay on her dying bed two years earlier. Her last words to him were a request to look after her baby boy and more importantly take care of his money. While his acceptance of his Aunt’s wish felt like a noble gesture at the time, it had lost its luster. As a matter of fact, it was really the beginning of a war between competing priorities.
To Darwin’s chagrin, his assumed obligation had created a reasonable justification for leaving his cushy life and highly sought after position at Messerschmitt, Dawes and Payne, LLC. Only now was his inner-ambition and perceived higher level of intelligence telling him that this had been a bad idea.
He eased out of his bed and struggled to wake himself. Thoughts of frustration, anger, and loyalty raced through his mind. How many more times was he going to be able to do this? Knowing that he was the only member of the posse that was awake at this early hour, Darwin tried to find humor in his impending discovery of the previous night’s debauchery once he went to wake the others.
He showered quick and primped himself even quicker. After throwing on a plain sweat suit, he rapidly brushed his teeth and took a shot of seven hour energy boost. Here we go again,
he said to himself as he left his room.
Flossy, get your ass up,
said Darwin, as he pounded on the front man’s door. Come on man. We have a flight to catch in less than two hours.
Darwin kept knocking on Flossy’s door. As this was normal activity for him during their road trips, Darwin had long ago stopped being embarrassed by the extents he’d go to keep this ship sailing. Come on Floss, I know you’re in there. I heard you a few hours ago.
The door opened to a dazed and confused Flossy wearing nothing other than his doo-rag and undies. What the fuck man,
he said with slurred speech.
Darwin grimaced at the sight of the sleep in the corner of his eyes.
No, what the fuck is we gotta get outta here; pronto!
Are you crazy D? Do you know what time it is?
Ah…yes, that’s why I’m here, Flossy.
Darwin looked Flossy straight in the eyes. He meant business and he could tell by the crazy look in Flossy’s eyes that he knew that Darwin was serious
