Pamela Martin

Pamela Martin, youngest child of six, was born in Lincolnshire just after the Second World War, a time when there was no inside plumbing or central heating, when there were few cars and children played safely in the streets; a time when entertainment was getting together with the community in which she lived, safety and love came from neighbours who shared their last pot of tea with neighbours. Pamela has had three lifetimes of exciting experiences. She has been living and working for seventeen years in Montreal, Canada, and twelve years in Florida, before retiring back in Lincolnshire to write, paint and breed ragdoll cats. Her two sons were her motivation to explore the world and show them just how life must be embraced with both hands. The different cultures and life experiences have been the rich colour palette from which to weave the wonderful patchwork of her characters' personalities. Some of these personalities and stories are passed down from her family, thankfully in an era before conversation was a lost art.

    WHY STUDY?

    Imagine having the following conversation:

    Student:  Why should I study?

Teacher: So you will do well in middle school and high school.

Student:  Why do I need to do well in middle or high school?

Teacher: So you can get into a good college, university or technical school.

Student:  What’s the point of getting into a good school after high school?

Teacher:  A degree from a good school helps you get a better job.

Student:  Why do I need a better job?

Teacher:  A better job gives you more money.

Student:  And what do I need more money for?

Teacher:  It lets you buy more stuff.

So, you can see that, logically, you study so you can get more stuff!

It is important to understand and to remember that studying and doing homework are not the same thing. The purpose of studying is to commit information, knowledge and skills to long-term memory in a retrievable and usable format; it is a lifelong task. In other words, you study so that you can keep what you’ve learned in your brain for a long time and so you can use that knowledge any time you need it. If you want to be the smartest person you can, you will be studying for your whole life, in one way or another. Homework, on the other hand, is all about practicing what you’ve learned and about doing well on school quizzes and tests; when you do homework, you focus on making grades for school.

Most people understand the need to study, but they have no idea what the process actually looks like or how they should start. With a few simple strategies, however, you will be equipped and ready to learn just about anything, both in and out of school. Along with other ideas, Six-by-Sixty Success is a powerful study tool that provides a structure for your study sessions.
