Letting Go - Lauren Fraser
Chapter One
Thirty years old. Shit, how had that happened?
It seemed like just a few days ago she’d celebrated being allowed to legally drink, and now, here she was thirty; single, with no prospects on the horizon. Dedicated to her job, but no real life.
Samantha had always pictured her life being different by the time she was this age. She’d expected to have kids and a husband. That dream was so far away right now, it was almost out of reach. In reality, at times, Sam didn’t recognize herself or what she even wanted anymore. Instead of snuggling up to celebrate with a husband, here she was getting dressed to go out on the town for her thirtieth birthday celebration with a few girlfriends.
Her friends had refused to tell her what they had cooked up for the evening. The only info Sam had been able to pump out of them was that it was something they had never done before. Oh, yeah, when she planned her outfit she was to think walking, talking sex and she should be dressed just perfect for the night ahead.
Standing in front of her closet, she pushed articles of clothing down the hanger line. It was official. Her wardrobe needed serious help. It consisted of professional attire, workout clothes, jeans and a sinful array of shoes.
With a groan, she peered down at her worn bathrobe and ran a finger over a stain on the pocket. Hell, this thing looked like it belonged to someone who never wanted to have sex again.
Her gaze landed on a pair of black cage boots. Now the shoes. They were sexy. Too bad she couldn’t just wear those.
She blew out a breath, and her brown bangs flipped from the puff of air, landing in a tousled mess. She ran her hands over her forehead to fix it. Almost time for a haircut.
Resigned, Sam reached into her closet and pulled out a scandalously short jean skirt that she hadn’t worn in God knows how long.
Better wear this thing before I’m officially too old to wear a miniskirt,
she muttered.
By the time she finished dressing, she had to admit she looked pretty damn good. The jean skirt was short enough to show off how great her legs were, but not so short that everyone could tell, what, if any, underwear she was wearing. From the back of her closest, she unearthed a black bustier that she didn’t even remember buying. The boning in the thing was amazing. It hugged her body tight, giving her a curvy appearance, camouflaging those last ten pounds she wanted to lose. And her breasts? Wow! That was all she could say. With a smile, she trailed her finger over the top swell of one breast.
Yep, this outfit definitely screams fuck me.
Twenty minutes later, Sam finally had the just-tumbled-out-of-bed look she was going for on her hair. Opting for heavy eye makeup, she used a liberal hand and painted her eyes a smoky gray. With a final spritz of her favorite perfume, she winked at her reflection in the mirror. Sam had to admit she was feeling pretty damn sexy.
The doorbell rang and she rushed to answer it. Sliding on her strappy espadrille wedges along the way, she was still hopping on one foot when she grabbed the door. On the other side stood her three best friends, ready for a night of lord knows what. She took a long look at her friends, threw her hand over her mouth to cover the laughter and ended up snorting instead. Lisa waggled her eyebrows and held up a liquor store bag, the movement wiggling her barely contained breasts in her Jo-Lo knock-off dress.
Good lord, I had no idea you three even owned anything remotely like the… I hesitate to use the word clothes, that you all are wearing.
She scrutinized her friends again and narrowed her eyes at Tiffany’s lingerie clad outfit. Just what the hell have you got planned for this evening? Judging by your outfits, it’s not some regular club-hopping event.
The women looked nervously at each other, around the room, anywhere but at Sam. That didn’t bode well for the evening.
Tiffany spoke up first. Well… I was invited to a party by a client, and we all thought it might be fun.
Propping her hands on her hips, Samantha continued to watch her until Tiffany shifted uncomfortably under the direct stare. "What kind of party? I’m sure there’s
