About this ebook
This was one of the places people told me to go, it was one the big trips that you should see: Alaska”
Jeff Goldblum
Welcome to Alaska, the land of glaciers and arctic ice, pure, raw, unforgiving and humongous in scale.
There are bears bigger than buffalos, national parks the size of nations, and glaciers bigger than other US states.
Alaska is a state that stimulates man’s basic instincts and ignites what Jack London termed ‘The Call of the Wild’
However unlike London and his gold-rush companions, travelers today will have a far easier time visiting the region's vast wilderness.
Indeed, one of the best elements of Alaska is its accessibility.
Few other places in the US allow you to climb an unclimbed mountain, walk where quite possibly no human foot has set foot before, or go forth into a national park that gets fewer annual visitors than the International Space Station.
Alaska is a land for wilderness purists who wish to observe big fauna in its natural habitat.
There is no need for zoos when you can get close-up views of brown bears snatching leaping salmon out of angry waterfalls or see the moose posing majestically on national-park roadsides
This is no place for the timid.
Hiking in unguarded backcountry might occasionally feel like being a visitor in a very big food court but be quiet and brave, and the musk oxen, gray wolves, bears, caribou and other creatures great and small will quietly accept the visitor into their domain.
Literally, Alaska means the object to which the action of the sea is directed.
My wife and I decided to go to Alaska with a Royal Carribean cruise with her sister and my brother in law in June 2018.
The decision was made after we returned from a pilgrimage tour to the Holy Lands.
It was a right time for my wife who had recovered from cancer 5 years ago and a knee operation 2 years ago.
She was eager to travel again having regained the function of her knee.
Alaska is a U.S. state found at the northwest end of North America.
Alaska is bigger than all except for 18 independent countries.
With the inclusion of its territorial waters, Alaska is bigger than the combined area of the next three largest states: Texas, California, and Montana.
It is the 3rd least populous and the most sparsely populated of the 50 United States.
The United States bought Alaska for 7.2 million U.S. dollars at about 2 cents per acre ($4.74/km2) from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867.
It formed the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959
The name "Alaska" commenced in the Russian colonial period when it was used to indicate the Alaska Peninsula. It came from an Aleut-language idiom, which indicates the mainland.
Literally, it is defined as the object to which the action of the sea is aimed.
Alaska is the most western and northern state in the United States and has the most eastern longitude in the USA because the Aleutian Islands expand into the Eastern Hemisphere.
Alaska is the only non-contiguous U.S. state on continental North America with 500 miles (800 km) of British Columbia (Canada) separating Alaska from Washington.
Alaska has a longer coastline than all the other U.S. states combined.
Alaska's economy is primarily through the fishing, natural gas, and oil industries, resources which it is abundant.
Military bases and tourism also play a considerable part of the economy.
The trip is mainly about our trip to Alaska from Vancouver on the ship Celebrity Infinity with mainly a pictorial narrative of our trip on the ship and the parts of Alaska we visited (particularly glaciers, whales and totem poles).
It is not meant as a guide to Alaska for tourists.
