Introduction
In the beginning, this book wasn’t even in mind when I started collecting Rock & Roll trivia. In 1986, I began accumulating these little-known facts to use on my radio program at 94 GOLD, a radio station in Jackson, Michigan. I would interject these facts going into or coming out of a song and continued doing this for years at various other stations. I kept thousands of these facts stored away for my own use, never intended for a book of this sort. Then, around 1994, I started an on-air contest where I would ask a Rock & Roll trivia question and give multiple choices for the answer. I began storing these questions on floppy discs, and eventually the idea to clean them up and form a book came to mind.
Okay, so where did I find all these facts?
When I started in 1986, I scoured everything I could find, looking for little tidbits; I read fronts, backs and insides of album covers, album inserts, lyric sheets, composer credits, musician credits, 45 sleeves, the inner grooves of lp’s and singles, the labels, television and radio interviews, clippings, articles, columns—anything.
Some of the information has come straight from the celebrities themselves. I recorded and kept most of the interviews I’ve conducted and listening back to them provided me with additional information. If a question had answers that contradicted themselves, either I didn’t use it or I put that contradiction to good use (see Question #177).
So relax, soak it in, amuse yourself and amaze your friends. There’s nothing philosophical here; no politics, no preaching, no heavy messages—just fun…the way it should be.
