About this ebook

It had been a serious risk to take, being implanted with Dr. Kite's innovative mind-control microchips, heralded as the one thing that could change the lives of Gigi, Ellen, and Lilly, the three women who agreed to the process.

But that change had come at a cost to them that went far beyond what they had expected, with two of the chips defective.

Not all of the women are prepared to allow Kite to rest after his warehouse goes up in flames and he escapes.

Tracking down the rogue doctor to a small coastal town, what does Lilly have in store for him? Is it a simple case of revenge, or has Lilly seen an opportunity for herself?

    Primal Will - Jane Suen

    Chapter 1

    DR. KITE

S o, which one will it be? Kite said, holding the two microchip injection pens, one in each hand. He offered them to her, a gift for his princess, as he had come to think of her.

Tiffany had heeded Lilly’s warnings, expecting the worst in the man. She maintained her reserve and was on her guard. So far, Kite had been the perfect gentleman. The other day when she was dizzy and vulnerable, he took charge, making sure she got medical attention, remaining at her side. She had sensed—no, more than that—she knew he was interested in her, in more ways than just being friends.

She thought back to her last boyfriend. She had fallen crazy in love with him, his boyish charm, the way he tossed his hair to the side, his rebellious streak. He melted her reserves and took her on a roller coaster ride higher than she’d ever ridden. But, in the end, his immaturity broke her heart into bits and pieces, and she felt it would never be put back together again.

At this low point of her life, she found Lilly and enrolled in her program. Tiffany got through the pain, fought her way back, and started a new life. She graduated top in class. Kite had been her first assignment, a personal request from Lilly. She couldn’t fail her.

Tiffany stared at Kite. He just stood there, not making a move to inject her, offering her a choice. She hesitated in the void of silence. What will he do if she refused? She exhaled, blowing a strand of hair away from her face.

    Chapter 2

    LILLY

She waited with a deepening sense of dread and worry for Tiffany’s call. The decision to assign her to Kite had been calculated, dependent upon Tiffany’s graduation from the program, one of two women in the first class. Tiffany was capable, smart, and quick-witted. She had more street smarts than book smarts, unlike Naomi. Tiffany was someone Lilly trusted. Someone she trained. Lilly had been patient, waiting for the right person, the right time.

She swiped a finger across her cell phone, checking one more time for missed calls.

Naomi was as different from Tiffany as night was from day. The two women had met in the program and trained together. They complemented each other, pulling on the other’s strength where one was weak in a way that made them better together than separate. They survived the program, rising to outdistance the others until only the two of them remained in the advanced class. They had become close, as friends and supporters, in this endeavor.

It didn’t come as a surprise when Naomi volunteered to find Tiffany after numerous calls went unanswered.

She picked up her cell phone and called.

    Naomi?

I’m in the car, said Naomi. Her voice was faint, surrounded by static and a hollow echo.

Can you talk louder? said Lilly, adjusting the volume, moving the phone closer to her ear.

Yeah, I went to see Tiffany. I knocked on the door, but there was no answer. Naomi paused, steering the car down a narrow street. She wasn’t there. I looked in the windows and tried the door, but it was locked.

    Was her car there?

    No.

    So where are you now?

Scouting the area. Looking for Tiffany.

    It’s getting late.

I’ll stop soon to eat and find a place to stay tonight, then start back up in the morning.

    Did you check Kite’s place?

    The lights were all out.

    You be careful, okay?

    Sure.

    Chapter 3

    ELLEN

To say she was nervous was an understatement. For months she had thought about Brad, throughout her pregnancy and after Angie was born. In moments of self-doubt over her impending role as a single mother, she had almost given in and reached out to Brad for help. But each time she had stopped before her fingers touched the phone.

She developed the rosy glow of pregnancy. Her baby became her first and most important priority. Gradually, the desire and connection to Brad diminished as the circumference of her belly increased.

She looked forward to the birth, as she’d made up her mind and resolved to be the best mom, to prove that she could do it. Ellen focused on this goal as the life inside her womb moved and kicked, exerting itself, extending a limb, exploring the boundaries of confinement.

Ellen tried to imagine what the baby would look like. Would she have the physique of her father, slim and muscular? Would the baby inherit the beauty of her mother? Or would she carry Ellen’s propensity for gaining weight and her fat cells? Would she have brains and beauty? Would she be healthy? She felt sure the baby would encompass the best of both parents. But she prayed, nevertheless, for this tiny life that she carried.

Ellen called her mother and father before she went to the hospital. When Angie was born, her mother was by her side, having gotten over the initial disappointment of Ellen having this baby without Brad.

Her mother had probed, tried to pry the details from Ellen. Ellen remained firm. Eventually, her mother stopped asking, knowing it was useless to push when Ellen had her mind made up. Mrs. Fulbright had raised Ellen to be an independent child. Finally, she’d let it go as her daughter came into motherhood on her own terms, and left
